Michael Red: So, the league, obviously, is halted with COVID and then in the middle of all of that, you have the George Floyd issue. You talk about how do people help you think through clutch times. The one thing that's been impressive for me, being a part of the family, is seeing how you all embrace the city. Be sure and try our new SNOWCAST APP! John: Talk about and want you to share a couple of thoughts about Warren Buffett and that whole deal. John: Just for a fun look, for our listeners sake. "As we got further along, one of my jobs was to staff up that operation and have a business plan," Feigin remembers. So, we stopped having basketball games and we stopped having concerts and we stopped. He wanted to keep the team, which was a big catalyst for the whole movement.". It just kind of really trying. Were you looking at other franchises that have done this before, or were you looking at other business models and merging some version thereof? It's like how do we, between us, like as you know. Its been talked about the whole Giannis effect. Theres some great things. Their experience is basketball. In many ways, you were doing a startup when you came to Milwaukee with your partners. And like, "Hey, you got to hear my idea," or something. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. Peter Feigin: And you create this really confusing, frustrating, challenging environment that, Mike, when you were playing, maybe you had a few performance psychologist. The whole world is on that balance, so part of what we haven't really talked about much is our culture here. Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin speaking at the opening of the team's new training center in downtown Milwaukee as Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett . So, then you start thinking about really building a district in a small city within a city. My wife is like, What are you doing? I dont know what Im doing!. With your owners and partners and this great group of people you put together, whats the future look like for the Bucks and what can some of the fans expect in the upcoming season? We had a, if you remember, we had a COVID extended season. While previous owner Herb Kohl, the five-term U.S. senator from Wisconsin, stood in high regard in Milwaukee, the franchise had begun to slip. Even though we just opened up a building two years ago, you're starting in a place where we're going to have some attrition and lose some fans and have to build equity back up and get back to basics of like building ticket sales, building everything else. He notes that with the Bucks also opening a G League team calledthe Wisconsin Herdthis past fall, there was internal debate about making the investment, but Edens was a notable force moving the decision forward. Peter: heres the market. So, just being a part of that, I mean, I know it sounds crazy. But usually, The Run comprises a core group of 15 to 20 players who range from 16 to 58 years old. John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? And we skewed higher than most NBA teams. Peter: Yeah, it is a combination of both because you really, I had a real rare opportunity to get out of sports and work outside of the sports industry for wealth. That's actually a step up from the orange vests and hard hats he's been wearing in Milwaukee, constantly checking on the construction of the Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center, the non-branded name of the arena. As Feigin hones the Bucks' in-arena and digital strategy, The Giannis Effect is the guide. Well the goal on the court is we want to win a championship. Number one, were in the middle of COVID. "We are literally just scraping the surface of what can come from this," he says. But talk about that nuance and being in leaders on the social injustice play. Because are they getting too sophisticated too early in terms of their value enterprise? So, whole different world kind of came around with COVID. By the way, Aaron is a fanatical basketball fan, and by the way, a regular classic Wisconsin superstar wants to come to a game, pays for his ticket wants to be left to watch the game. And really build sports entertainment and residential and commercial around it and really have an urban development company that is fueled by the strength of a brand of an NBA team. "Can you imagine? I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. Peter Feigin on the Fiserv Forum, Sports Betting, and the Impact of Giannis WHRB News March 3, 2019 . The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. So, that part of it was awesome. Peter Feigin, president of the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks and Fiserv Forum since 2014, graduated from Franklin & Marshall in 1992 as an American studies major. Talk about the importance of having diversity in the front office particularly. You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. Its all about your partner, it was one of these opportunities where she was just all in and to her benefit, like I owe her forever because it was, like its been an unbelievable, run and a huge opportunity. Peter: You are a genius because you use food as youre incentive and nothing better than ice cream. 1 team in the league, to be the brand representation.' I mean, I probably publicly spoke for the first time in my life 100 times in the first 200 days to everybody from Lions Clubs to the barber shop, to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts to kind of preach how big a deal it is for city this size to have and keep an NBA team. My son was a freshman at San Joaquin Memorial High School when Brook Lopez was there and he played with Brook under coach Pat Giles. Do you want to be in a place where people are having fun and were trying to get rid of all the toxic. We're going to build it locally, regionally, nationally and then internationally. So, Giannis and I have an interesting relationship and sometimes I need him, sometimes he needs me. The people part is always tough. Peter Feigin: That this was a year you couldn't even imagine. Ive never seen less arguing in a serious pickup game, said Adam Keefe, a former N.B.A. I really think its kind of a cycle of selflessness and kind of best practices. This is probably the best hour of the week. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. Peter: Well, I always default to the Cluckery. Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. "You will be in a business meeting on Monday with one of the 300-500 business executives in the town and you will see them some place later that week or the week after, unlike in New York City," he says. I took great pride in seeing the development of downtown and what you guys were doing with the city. Peter: which I cant even believe it, Id probably have some fun teaching. What has it meant to you to bet on yourself? So, of course, he's just had enough. How big a deal it is to renovate downtown, and how big we can become and what a billboard the Milwaukee Bucks should be for Wisconsin around the world. I think it starts with human capital, but it really starts with road mapping out each little thing. And until next time, I'm Michael Red. Just my own exposure was mixed in what are best practices for centralized services. I mean, from the local barber shops to the local business leaders, to having owners that are from Wisconsin. A billionaire? And I didn't need to get paid. We had this, I think it was an intern, said to us like, Well, we should, have you read about ghost kitchens? And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. Its gotten through its first iteration to see where it is. This is a human business. financial capital with human capital to end up with the right result, how is that math done in Peter Feigins head? Peter: Wow. The most recent All-Star Game voting returns showed Antetokounmpo at 1.48 million votes, trailing only James. How do you get people who care? Peter Feigin: And I'm digging into the business, and I had no desire to run it or to move to Milwaukee. It all starts with the answer, right? Donations to the school can be turned into compensation. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think I moved, I graduated from college and had a job, had an opportunity for a job that was kind of nuts. His friends, while the games are suspended, are trying to stay as prepared as possible. Peter Feigin: They made it really simple. And I think he's going to sell the team. And theyve got it on. And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? We spend a lot of our time really trying to figure out what are the levers to move the revenue. Then I think the big huge growth for NBA is how do we really figure out what our media is domestically and what it is internationally like in the next two years, which is changing dramatically. Im so proud and honored to have this conversation with you today, and thank you for your generosity of your time. Peter: Well, I think its leadership 101, youve got to grasp where you are number one, and this was a very distressed brand company position. How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. Peter Feigin: These are all massive, huge, systematic problems for generations that we've got to chip away from every day. Right? That's the way we think about it. Michael Red: One thing that impresses me about our organization is how diverse it is. Talk about the special, the specialness of how you were involved with designing the championship ring, because theres a lot of thought that you guys put into that ring. Peter: We like to be, delusionally optimistic. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. Don't talk to me, don't text me, don't come back unless you give me a pair of All-Star socks. That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God. And if nothing else, like we kind of, I always answer everything pretty simply. Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. Feigin told the crowd, "The city has really embraced the organization and this team in a way that is just heartwarming and proud and were not even there yet, which is really exciting and great so thank you very very much!". John: That is a big deal. Michael Red: Peter, Peter Feigin. Peter: Thats great, thats one of the only times that questions been asked. Going back into the past is something I wanted to ask you about. But it was one of these kind of diversion life lessons that you don't know where life takes you and just take total opportunity for it. You got to think about what the objective is, but I truly do believe, just no is not an answer if you surround yourself with smart people. We screw around a hell of a lot, but let me tell you, if one of our guys was in trouble, if we need to circle the wagons, if they need advice on evaluating something they're doing, they know that it's extremely objective, it's immediate, and that's what we do here. So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." And then we kind of sat there until like, "Oh, my God." Those are simple, its his genius. If you're going to go look at teams, grab my brother. Either it came from Khris Middleton or Jack [crosstalk 00:02:21]. From 2006-2014, the Bucks only made the postseason twice in eight seasons. Im like, we actually, might have a chance to get this done and to make a long story short, and unfortunately my twin brother thinks like I owe him a commission, for. So, for us, it goes back to constantly being really honest and forthright about where you are and how you can improve. Peter Feigin: And how do you rethink your strategies for retail? And I think it was like a checkpoint for us certainly, but for the whole country on like, "Boy, this is one of those inflection points that we've got to make matter in a big way." You sound super excited about the future. Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. How do we build the baselines? Within 45 minutes, we had this unbelievable excitement of, were nuts, why dont we do like take home its big ordering out. Youve collected all this human capital, both starting and back up. How do we continue to not only understand it, but monetize it in a very big way? Peter Feigin: I mean, my mouth just watered. Thats the relentless, thats the difference I think of what success is. And that's kind of the way I think about everything. So, he's at the All-Star game and I literally said, "It's too bad we're not on Zoom," because I'm holding these. We call it volundeering. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. The Bucks are one of the 17 teams that is competing in the new NBA 2K League, a necessary decision in Feigin's mind. Yes, we are shiny toy people want to see how you build a project in time and under budget and how youd manage a project. Michael Red: Peter Feigin. It so happens Bucks co-owners Marc Lasry and Wes Edens sent their children to Trevor Day. And that's tough, too. And Khris parks in a handicap space, because five minutes he's in. He simplified the commodities business like, oh, I understand it now. Michael Red: It's been wonderful to watch. Peter: Well, I think first of all, everything is like, you plan to be great. He was a truly taught consumer products, marketing, and operations guy, was okay. Talk a little bit on a fun topic, when I was reading up about you and the team and everything else, I read about this new venture you guys got going over in Wisconsin called the Cluckery and I got hungry looking at the website and looking at the menu. I think one of the big skills is, I definitely do not know the answer to everything and if youre able to Basically I do think I can solve anything. So I'm never a great example of where the balance is and what the cut off is in everything because it's all one big puzzle to me. And I think we find it like it's a responsibility where we can set the example and we can innovate and then we can shout it from the mountaintops. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. This kind of like, "Why are we looking at other people's metrics? Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. Peter: I think when the opportunity came and we thought it was such a good idea, we were aiming an incredible. Peter, before I let you go, I have to ask you. The building will also be the focal point of a 30-acre development in downtown Milwaukee, an urban revitalization project that Feigin believes in. Afterward, a big group heads to City Diner on Broadway for brunch. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? John: Whos raising their hand saying Dad, were all in with you. How does this work? John: It looks amazing. Talk about that. Talk about that relationship that you have with the players. Peter's Hairless Twin is a twin brother Peter Griffin keeps locked up in a storm shed. Because I don't think we're really worried about kind of like we would think half a million people are going to die, that what would happen to hospitals and ICUs and things like that. So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. How did that come together? Anyone can read what you share. Michael Red: You talked about Coach Bud and the whole team organization, which I think Coach Bud has done a terrific job thus far. This years edition comes stamped with the Roman numeral XXVIII, to commemorate the games 28 years of existence. And it's kind of as an adult got me to a place where I desperately want our youth to get exposed to things they wouldn't normally get exposed to because that's how they learn what's out there. And I think with time, you certainly kind of can take that. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. How do we keep driving? Peter: We didnt finish the championship till mid-July, which meant like we didnt have long to get the rings included. But if Woodhouse had any qualms about digging in on defense against various titans of industry, he quickly learned that everyone was competitive. Do you want to like, figure out what the handles are and become aThere are lots of opportunities in that realm, which I think are immediate. In all, about 100 players have played in The Run over the decades, some more luminous than others. "We have a. That was, Peter: That was it. Talk about that balance between what you do with Milwaukee and obviously, with your family, right? Malcolm D. Lee, the director of the Space Jam sequel starring LeBron James, and Christopher dAmboise, a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, are two of the games founding fathers. Not only do you have to have the best facilities, the best resources, no reason for anybody to say, What want to be, you got to be good people. He's not the smartest guy in the world, but he'll certainly know the business and he'll help you out beyond your hedge fund guys and your data guys.". My favorite part of coming to Milwaukee is going into your stash of gear and getting the hoodies and the gear. So that that's been kind of part of my learning is like, "How do we create a system that we're in a much better place six months from now and a much better place 12 months and a much better place three years from now that we've shown change in metrics and results and everything like that. Peter: professionalized on a revenue basis, so yeah. Peter: its not the biggest, but it just talks about how special when you talk about in a small market, and we try to coalesce with the Brewers and the Packers as much as we can to be like the strength of these three pro teams and their players and their coaches and our coaches and GM spend a lot of time with the coaches and GMs at the Packers, which is just great. "We know the reality is 18 months ago, no one would've said Giannis is one of the top five players in the NBA, so we've had really what we would call the Giannis Effect," Feigin explains. I've known Jon for, I don't know, 13, 14 years, and to see what he's done with the team as the general manager has been really impressive. And if youre a fan of the show dont forget to follow to hear new episodes, and Rate or Review us wherever you tune in!
